Movable Steering Columns: Description
All models except Lincoln Continental use extruded absorber type tilt columns which have an outer column tube with collar attaching brackets that provide a collapsing system. The upper steering shaft is a solid steel bar with two grooves to accept clips; the lower shaft is a formed steel tube which fits over upper shaft. Capri, Mustang, Fairmont and Zephyr use the Modular I style, others use the Mini style. Lincoln Continental uses a convoluted bellows type column that collapses up to 6 inches on hard impact.
