Timing Check

Engine Running Test must be activated while checking or adjusting timing. Connect timing light. Start engine and check timing for no longer than 25 seconds. Refer to vehicle emission decal for base timing specification. Timing is calculated as follows: Base timing plus 20°, plus or minus 3°, equals initial timing. Results are as follows:

• Timing is base, plus 20°, plus or minus 3°: Go to Engine Running Self-Test.
• Timing is not base, plus 20°, plus or minus 3°: Go to test Q, Spark Timing Check and check spark output circuit to TFI module.
• Vehicle does not start: go to test A: No Start Problem.
• Vehicle stalls during 25 second timing check: Go to test P: No Codes or Invalid Codes.
