Test E - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Test (Code 23): Notes
NOTE:
If code 23 was displayed during the Key On - Engine Off Test, start at step 1). If code 23 was displayed during the Engine Running Test, start at step 3).
- Check for code 68. If code 68 is displayed during Quick Test, perform test for code 68 before proceeding. If code 68 is not displayed, proceed to step 2).
- Perform Key On - Engine Off Test while attempting to completely close throttle. Check for service code 23. If code 23 is present, proceed to step 5). If code 23 is not present, TPS is slightly out of adjustment. DO NOT attempt to adjust. EEC system is functioning properly.
- Check for code 58. If code 58 is displayed during Quick Test, perform test for code 58 before proceeding. If code 58 is not displayed, proceed to step 4).
- Check for codes 31 or 41 present during Engine Running Test. If either or both codes are present, perform appropriate test. If codes 31 and 41 are not present, proceed with test.
- Visually inspect carburetor and throttle linkages for binding or sticking. Check for throttle stuck on high cam. If no problems are found, proceed with test. If any problems are found, correct as necessary and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect TP sensor harness connector. Inspect both connectors. Connect voltmeter positive lead to TP harness circuit 351 and negative lead to circuit 359. Turn ignition on and observe voltage. If voltage is more than 6 volts, perform Reference Voltage Test. If voltage is less than 4 volts, repair open in harness circuit 359 and repeat Quick Test. If voltage is between 4 and 6 volts, proceed to step 7).
- Turn ignition off and wait for 10 seconds. Disconnect TP sensor harness connector. Perform Key On - Engine Off Test. If code 63 is displayed, replace TP sensor and repeat Quick Test. If code 63 is not displayed, proceed to step 8).
- Connect voltmeter positive lead to TP harness circuit 355 and negative lead to ground. Turn ignition on and observe voltage reading. If reading is higher than 2 volts, repair harness short and repeat Quick Test. If reading is 2 volts or less, replace processor and repeat Quick Test.
