Standard Columns: Disassembly
- Remove steering wheel, column shrouds, turn signal and wiper/washer switches. Remove steering column from vehicle. Remove the upper bearing retainer plate and bearing snap ring.
- Insert the blades of two screwdrivers under the bearing and pry it off the steering shaft. Using a screwdriver, pry out the lower bearing retainer and discard it.
- Pull the lower end of the shaft assembly downward through the tube until the lower bearing/sleeve with lower shaft clears the lower end of the tube. Slide the lower bearing/sleeve off of the steering shaft.
- Pull the steering shaft assembly out of the outer tube from the bottom of the tube. Scribe a mark on the upper steering shaft where the upper and lower steering shaft sections form a joint line.
- Also scribe marks on the upper and lower shafts to indicate shaft relationship. Separate upper and lower steering shaft sections. Remove and discard the insulator clips.
- Remove the 2 bolts holding the lock cylinder housing to the outer tube flange bracket. Rotate the ignition key to "START" position. Pull the actuator interlock out of the clearance hole in the tube. Lift the casting off the steering shaft.
