Standard Columns: Reassembly
- Turn the ignition switch to the "START" position to locate the actuator interlock through the clearance hole in the outer tube. Install and tighten the 2 cylinder housing-to-bracket bolts.
- Install new steel insulator clips on the flats on the steering column upper shaft. Lubricate the lower 6 inches of the steering column upper shaft with chassis lube.
- Assemble upper and lower shafts noting position of scribe marks for shaft-to-shaft relationship. Slide lower bearing, with sleeve, up into the outer tube as far as possible. Use a length of pipe to seat bearing retaining ring against the bearing.
- Pin punch the steering column upper shaft serration diameter to ensure an interference fit between the bearing inner race and the steering column upper shaft. Slide the upper bearing and insulator as far as possible down the shaft.
- Place a 3.25" (82.5 mm) length of 3/4" (19 mm) diameter pipe over the end of the shaft. Install the steering wheel nut and tighten until the bearing is fully seated. Remove the steering wheel nut and pipe and install the bearing snap ring.
- Install the upper bearing retainer plate. Install column shrouds, turn signal and wiper/washer switches. Install steering column in vehicle.
