Air Vane Meter Assembly

The air vane meter assembly consists of 2 sensors contained in a single housing. It is mounted between the air cleaner and the throttle body assembly. The sensors are positioned such that both are exposed to intake air flow.

The sensors are the Vane Air Flow sensor (VAF) and the Vane Air Temperature (VAT) sensor. The combined information from these sensors allows the ECA to determine the temperature and specific mass of air entering the engine.

As air passes through the assembly, the air vane of the airflow sensor swings on a pivot. This vane is connected to a variable resistor (potentiometer) which is in turn connected to a constant 5 volts reference voltage. As the angle of the air vane changes, so does the voltage signal from the potentiometer to the ECA. This voltage signal represents a specific rate of air flow.

When this information is combined with incoming air temperature information, as supplied by the air temperature sensor, the actual mass of air entering the engine can be determined.
