Fuel Pump Circuit
- Unplug electrical connector to fuel pumps at high pressure fuel pump. Connect voltmeter to body wiring harness connector. Turn ignition switch "ON" while watching voltmeter.
- Voltage should rise to battery voltage, then return to 0 volts after about 1 second. If voltage is not as specified, check inertia switch and electrical system.
- On Capri, Mustang, Cougar and Thunderbird models, use an ohmmeter to check continuity directly at high pressure fuel pump terminals. If no continuity, replace high pressure fuel pump.
- Connect ohmmeter across body wiring harness connector. If continuity is present (about 5 ohms), low pressure pump circuit is OK.
- If no continuity is present in previous step, remove fuel tank and check continuity at fuel pump/pump sender flange terminals. If no continuity is present at pump flange terminals, replace the assembly.
- On Escort, EXP and Lynx models, connect ohmmeter to fuel pump wiring harness connector. If no continuity, check directly at pump terminals. Replace fuel pump if test shows no continuity at pump terminals.
