2.3L Engine

  1. On cylinder to be adjusted, position the camshaft so the base of the lobe is resting on the rocker arm of valve to be checked. Using Valve Spring Compressor Lever (T88T-6565-BH), slowly apply pressure to rocker arm until valve lifter is completely collapsed. Insert the proper feeler gauge between camshaft and rocker arm.
  2. Valve clearance should be .035-.055" (.88-1.3 mm). If clearance is excessive, check valve spring assembled height. Spring height should be 1.49-1.55" (37.8-39.3 mm). If height is okay, remove and clean rocker arm, camshaft and valve lifter as necessary to check for wear and/or damage. If height is less than specified, valve could be sticking open.
  3. If height is more than specified, this could indicate excessive grinding of valve face and seat. To correct, install the necessary shim between cylinder head spring pad and spring. Standard shim thickness is .030" (.76 mm). Replace damaged or worn parts as necessary.
CAUTION: Using more shims than recommended will result in over stressing valve springs and cam lobes.
