Pinpoint Test A

  1. Perform EEC-IV Quick Test  If Quick Test was performed according to the procedures in the TESTS W/CODES article in this section, go to step 2. If Quick Test was not tested as specified, go to the appropriate article and perform the Quick Test procedure.
  2. Check For Spark During Cranking  Using a spark tester, check for spark at all spark plug wires while cranking. If spark was present and consistent on ALL spark plug wires (one spark per crankshaft revolution), go to step 3. If spark was not as specified, go to step 7.
  3. Check PIP Signal At EDIS Module  With key off, connect EDIS diagnostic cable to BOB, EDIS module, and coil pack. DO NOT connect VR sensor tee. Use EDIS diagnostic "4" overlay on BOB (if available). Connect EDIS diagnostic cable negative lead to battery, leave positive lead disconnected. Set EDIS diagnostic cable box switch to "4/6 Cylinder" position. Set DVOM on 20-volt AC scale. Crank engine and measure voltage between PIP E (43) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If stabilized AC voltage reading is greater than 4.5 volts, go to step 4. If reading was 4.5 volts or less, go to step 8.
  4. Check For PIP Open To ECA  With key off, disconnect ECA. Connect ECA BOB to ECA harness connector. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between PIP E (43) at BOB and PIP (56) at ECA BOB. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 5. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  5. Check IGN GND At EDIS Module  With key off, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between IGN GND E (47) and BAT-(7) at BOB. If resistance is 1025 ohms or less, go to step 6. If resistance is greater than 1025 ohms, go to step 11.
  6. Check IGN GND Open Circuit To ECA  With key off, and ECA disconnected, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale, measure resistance between IGN GND E (47) at BOB and terminal No. 16 (IGN GND) of ECA BOB. If resistance is 1025 ohms or less, remove test equipment. Reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If Continuous Memory Code 18 is still present, go to PINPOINT TEST B, Step 1. If no codes are present, go to the TESTS W/O CODES article for no start problems. If resistance is greater than 1025 ohms, repair ignition ground to ECA open circuit. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  7. Check Spark Plugs & Wires  Check spark plug wires for insulation damage, looseness or shorts. Remove and check spark plugs for damage, wear, carbon deposits and correct plug gap. If spark plugs and wires are okay, reinstall plugs and wires and go to step 12. If spark plugs and wires are defective, repair or replace damaged components as necessary. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  8. Isolate EDIS Module, PIP Fault  With key off, connect EDIS diagnostic cable positive lead to battery. DVOM 20 volt AC scale. Hold the EDIS diagnostic cable PIP Push Button down. Crank engine and measure voltage between PIP E (43) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If the settled AC voltage reading is greater than 4 volts, go to step 9. If voltage is 4 volts or less, repair or replace damaged component. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and Rerun Quick Test.
  9. Check For PIP Short To Ground, Isolate EDIS Module & ECA  With key off, disconnect ECA. Disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee. Leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to EDIS module side of vehicle harness connector. Disconnect EDIS diagnostic cable positive lead at battery. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between PIP E (43) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair PIP short circuit to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory and Rerun Quick Test.
  10. Check For PIP Short To VBAT, Isolate EDIS Module & ECA  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between PIP E (43) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 0.5 volt, repair short circuit. PIP is shorted to power. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is 0.5 volt or less, replace ECA. PIP circuit is shorted internally in ECA. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory and Rerun Quick Test.
  11. Check PWR GND To EDIS Module, IGN GND Fault  With key off, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between PWR GND E (27) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If resistance than 1050 ohms or less, replace EDIS module. Ground circuit is open in EDIS module. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is greater than 1050 ohms, repair open circuit. PWR GND circuit to EDIS module is open. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory and Rerun Quick Test.
  12. Check PWR Gnd to EDIS Module  With key off, connect EDIS diagnostic cable to BOB, EDIS module, and coil pack. Do not connect VR sensor tee. Use EDIS "4" overlay (if available). Connect EDIS diagnostic cable negative lead to battery, leave positive lead disconnected. Set EDIS diagnostic cable box switch to "4/6 cylinder" position. Set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. measure resistance between IGN GND E (47) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If resistance is 1050 ohms or less, go to step 13. If resistance is greater than 1050 ohms, go to step 53.
  13. Check For VBAT Open To EDIS Module  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VPWR E (51) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 14. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open VBAT to EDIS module circuit. Remove all test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory and Rerun Quick Test.
  14. Check For VBAT Open To Coil  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VBAT C (5) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 26. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open VBAT to EDIS module circuit. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  15. Check C1 At Coil Pack During Cranking  With key off and DVOM on 20-volt AC scale, crank engine and measure voltage between BAT- (7) and coil C1C (3) at BOB. If stabilized AC voltage reading is greater than 1 volt, go to step 16. If voltage is 1 volt or less, go to step 34.
  16. Check C2 At Coil Pack During Cranking  With key off, and DVOM on 20-volt AC scale, crank engine and measure voltage between BAT- (7) and coil C2C (6) at BOB. If any stabilized AC voltage reading is greater than 1 volt, replace coil pack. Input to coil is okay, but no high voltage output. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If stabilized voltage is 1 volt or less, go to step 34.
  17. Check C2 At Coil Pack With KOEO  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and coil C2C (6) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 18. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 23.
  18. Check C2 At EDIS Module With KOEO  With key off set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and coil C2E (55) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 19. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open C2 circuit. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  19. Check C2 At EDIS Module, Isolate Coil  With key off, disconnect coil pack from coil tee, leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and coil C2E (55) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, go to step 22. If voltage is 0.5 volt or less, reconnect coil and go to step 20.
  20. Check C2 At EDIS Module With Coil Connected & KOEO  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and C2E (55) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 21. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open circuit. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  21. Check C2 Coil Primary  With key off, disconnect coil pack from vehicle harness connector. Connect EDIS diagnostic cable negative battery lead to battery, leave positive lead disconnected. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between VBAT (+) and C2 pins of coil. If the resistance reading is greater than 0.4 ohm, reconnect coil and go to step 15. If resistance is 0.4 ohms or less, replace coil pack. Coil primary windings are shorted. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  22. Isolate EDIS Module, C2 Shorted To Power  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee, leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and C2E (55) at BOB. If DC voltage is 0.5 volt or less, replace EDIS module. C2 is shorted to power. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is greater than 0.5 volt, repair short circuit. C2 shorted to power. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  23. Check C2 Short To Ground  With key off, set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C2C (6) at BOB. If resistance is less than 1500 ohms, go to step 24. If resistance is 1500 ohms or more, replace coil pack. C2 primary circuit is open. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  24. Check For C2 Short To Ground, Isolate EDIS Module  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee, leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C2C (6) at BOB. If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to step 25. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace EDIS module. C2 circuit is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  25. Check For C2 Short To Ground, Isolate Coil  With key off, disconnect coil from EDIS diagnostic cable coil tee. Leave vehicle harness connected to tee. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C2C (6) at BOB. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short circuit. C2 is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace coil pack. C2 short to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  26. Check For C1 At Coil Pack With KOEO  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and C1C (3) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 10 volts, go to step 27. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to step 30.
  27. Check For C1 At EDIS Module, Isolate Coil  With key off, disconnect coil tee from coil. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and C1E (53) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is greater than 1 volt, go to step 33. If voltage is 1 volt or less, go to step 28.
  28. Check For C1 At EDIS Module, With KOEO  With key off, reconnect coil to coil Tee. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between BAT- (7) and C1E (53) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to step 29. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open circuit. C1 circuit is open at EDIS module. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  29. Check C1 Coil Primary  With key off, disconnect coil pack from vehicle harness connector. Ensure EDIS diagnostic cable negative battery lead is connected to battery and positive lead is disconnected. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between VBAT (+) and C1 terminal of coil. If resistance reading is greater than 0.4 ohm, reconnect coil and go to step 17. If resistance is 0.4 ohm or less, replace coil pack. Coil primary windings are shorted. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  30. Check For C1 Short To Ground  With key off, set DVOM on 200-ohm scale, measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C1C (3) at BOB. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 31. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace coil pack. Coil primary circuit is open. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  31. Check For C1 Short To Ground, Isolate EDIS Module  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee, leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C1C (3) at BOB. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step 32. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace EDIS module. C1 circuit is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  32. Check For C1 Short To Ground, Isolate Coil  With key off, disconnect coil from coil tee, leave vehicle harness connected. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between BAT- (7) and C1C (3) at BOB. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short circuit. C1 circuit is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace coil pack. C1 shorted to ground in coil. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  33. Isolate EDIS Module, C1 Fault  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS module tee, leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. Measure voltage between BAT- (7) and C1E (53) at BOB. If DC voltage reading is 0.5 volt or less, replace EDIS module. C1 is shorted to VBAT. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is greater than 0.5 volt, repair short circuit. C1 circuit is shorted to VBAT. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  34. Check VRS Amplitude At EDIS Module  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt AC scale. Crank engine and measure voltage between VRS+ E (35) and VRS- E (48) at BOB. If stabilized AC voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, go to step 35. If voltage is 0.5 volt or less, go to step 44.
  35. Check VRS (+) Bias At EDIS Module  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VRS+ E (35) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If the DC voltage is 0.8-2.2 volts, replace EDIS module. Input to EDIS module is okay, but there is no output. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is not as specified, go to step 36.
  36. Check VRS (+) Bias, Isolate VR Sensor  With key off, disconnect VR sensor from vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VRS+ E (35) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is 0.8-2.2 volts, go to step 40. If voltage is not 0.8-2.2 volts, go to step 37.
  37. Check VRS (+) For Short To Power Or Ground  If DC bias voltage reading in step 35 is less than 0.8 volt, go to step 39. If voltage in step 35 is 0.8 volts or more, go to step 38.
  38. Check VRS (+) For Short To Power, Isolate EDIS Module  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee, leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VRS+ E (35) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 0.5 volt, repair short circuit. VRS (+) circuit is shorted to power. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is 0.5 volt or less, replace EDIS module. VRS (+) circuit is shorted to power. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  39. Check VRS (+) For Short To Ground, Isolate EDIS Module  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee, leave diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 2-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between VRS+ E (35) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If resistance is less than 1025 ohms, repair short circuit. VRS (+) is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is 1025 ohms or more, replace EDIS module. VRS (+) is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  40. Check VRS (-) Bias  With key off, set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VRS- E (48) and BAT-(7) at BOB. If DC voltage is 0.8-2.2 volts, replace VR sensor. Short to ground in VR sensor. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is not 0.8-2.2 volts, go to step 41.
  41. Check VRS (-) Signal High Or Low  If DC bias voltage reading in step 40 is less than 0.8 volt, go to step 43. If voltage is 0.8 volt or more, go to step 42.
  42. Check VRS (-) For Short To VBAT, Isolate EDIS Module  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee, leave EDIS diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure resistance between VRS- E (48) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 0.5 volt, repair short circuit. VRS (-) circuit is shorted to VBAT. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is 0.5 volt or less, replace EDIS module. VRS (-) circuit is shorted to VBAT. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  43. Check VRS (-) For Short To Ground, Isolate EDIS Module  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee, leave diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VRS- E (48) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is greater than 0.5 volt, repair short circuit. VRS circuit is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If voltage is 0.5 volt or less, replace EDIS module. VRS circuit is shorted to ground. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  44. Check VRS Amplitude At EDIS Module, Isolate EDIS Module  With key off, disconnect EDIS module from EDIS diagnostic cable module tee, leave diagnostic cable connected to vehicle harness connector. Set DVOM on 20-volt AC scale. Crank engine and measure voltage between VRS+ E (35) and VRS- E (48) at BOB. If stabilized AC voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, replace EDIS module. VRS (+) circuit is shorted to VRS (-). Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  45. Check VRS Resistance  With key off, set DVOM on 20-k/ohm scale. measure resistance between VRS- E (48) and VRS+ E (35) at BOB. If resistance is 2200-2400 ohms, go to step 46. If resistance is not 2200-2400 ohms, go to step 49.
  46. Check VRS (+) Bias At EDIS Module  With key off, reconnect EDIS module. Set DVOM on 20-volt DC scale. With KOEO, measure voltage between VRS+ E (35) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If DC voltage is 0.8-2.2 volts, go to step 47. If voltage is not 0.8-2.2 volts, go to step 36.
  47. Check VRS Air Gap  With key off, check VRS air gap. Ensure there is an air gap between sensor and trigger wheel. Air gap is not adjustable. If air gap is okay, go to step 48. If air gap is not okay, repair or replace components as required. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  48. Check VRS Trigger Wheel  With key off, check trigger wheel and VR sensor. If trigger wheel or VR sensor is damaged or loose, repair or replace as required. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If trigger wheel is not damaged and VR sensor is not loose, replace VR sensor. Sensor output is low. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  49. Check High Or Low VRS Resistance  If resistance reading obtained in step 45 is less than 2200 ohms, go to step 52. If resistance is 2200 ohms or more, go to step 50.
  50. Check For VRS (+) Open Circuit (Resistance High Fault)  With key off, connect EDIS diagnostic cable VR sensor tee to vehicle harness connector. DO NOT connect VR sensor to sensor tee. Set DVOM on 20-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between VRS+ S (31) and VRS+ E (35) at BOB. If resistance is greater than 2200 ohms, repair open circuit. VRS (+) circuit is open. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is 2200 ohms or less, go to step 51.
  51. Check For VRS (-) Open Circuit (Resistance High Fault)  With key off, set DVOM on 20-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between VRS- S (32) and VRS- E (48) at BOB. If resistance is 2025 ohms or less, replace VR sensor. Resistance is high. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is greater than 2025 ohms, repair open circuit. VRS (-) circuit is open. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  52. Check VRS (+) For Short To VRS (-) (Isolate VRS)  With key off, connect VR sensor tee to vehicle harness connector. DO NOT connect VR sensor to sensor tee. Set DVOM on 200-k/ohm scale. Measure resistance between VRS+ E (35) and VRS- E (48) at BOB. If resistance is greater than 3000 ohms, replace VR sensor. Sensor windings are shorted. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. If resistance is 3000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. VRS (+) shorted to VRS (-). Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
  53. Check PWR GND To EDIS Module (Ground Fault)  With key off, ensure EDIS diagnostic cable negative lead to battery is connected, leave positive lead disconnected. Set DVOM on 200-ohm scale. Measure resistance between PWR GND (27) and BAT- (7) at BOB. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace EDIS module. Ground circuit is open. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test. Service open circuit. Remove test equipment and reconnect all components. Clear Continuous Memory Codes and rerun Quick Test.
CAUTION: Never connect ECA to ECA BOB when performing EDIS diagnostics unless directed to do so.
