Ford uses 2 types of starters, permanent magnet and positive engagement, for all passenger cars except Probe with 2.2L engine.

The permanent magnet starting system includes a permanent magnet, 6-pole, 4-brush starting motor with solenoid actuated drive, battery, starter-ignition switch, neutral start switch (A/T models), starter relay and circuit wiring.

The positive engagement starting system includes a 4-brush starter motor with integral positive engagement drive, battery, starter-ignition switch, neutral start switch (A/T models), starter relay and circuit wiring.
