1) Checking System Integrity Visually check all wiring, connectors and components for evidence of damage, shorting or looseness. If a fault is found, repair as necessary. If no fault is found, go to next step.
2) Checking CPS Circuit Resistance Ensure ignition is off. Install breakout box, leaving ECA disconnected. Disconnect distributor connector. On 1.8L, measure resistance of CPS, VPWR and GND circuits between ECA and distributor. On 2.2L turbo, measure resistance of CPS and CIDREF circuits between ECA and distributor. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair circuit between distributor to ECA. On 1.8L, if resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. On 2.2L turbo, if resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace CPS sensor.
3) Checking Voltage To Distributor (1.8L) Disconnect distributor connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between distributor VPWR wire and ground. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to CIRCUIT TEST VPWR. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
4) Checking Distributor Ground (1.8L) Disconnect distributor connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between distributor VPWR wire and distributor GND wire. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair distributor GND wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace CPS sensor.
