Distributor: Description and Operation

2.2L Ignition Components:

PURPOSE
Distributes ignition coil spark to plugs at the correct time and in proper sequence (firing order).

LOCATION
Left end cylinder head.

OPERATION
This is similar to Duraspark system used on other Ford vehicles. The breakerless distributor has both mechanical (centrifugal) and vacuum advance. Ignition timing is advanced by vacuum at low speeds and by the centrifugal mechanism at higher speeds. Timing is modified by the ECA at altitudes above 6500 feet to maintain proper engine performance and satisfactory exhaust emissions.

CONSTRUCTION
Breakerless distributer uses both a vacuum unit and mechanical advance mechanism to control spark timing.
