Description & Operation
The power window system consists of window switches, wiring and connectors. Power windows are operated by window switches. Reversible type motors are mounted with each individual window regulator. Each window has an individual switch for separate control. A master control switch is located on left front door or center console. All windows may be controlled from this switch.
The Power Windows System is powered from the ignition switch through the 30A Circuit Breaker 14 and is hot with ignition switch in the RUN and ACCY positions. When any of the window switches are activated, current flows from the ignition switch through the window switches to one lead of the window motor for UP and the other lead for DN.
The current causes the window motor to rotate in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction to raise or lower the window. Both motor leads are grounded through the power window main switch when all of the window switches are OFF. The driver's side has a power window main switch which can lower or raise any of the windows. The power window main switch has a lock switch which cuts power to all the individual window switches. This allows only the driver to operate the windows.
On Explorer, a One-Touch system is available on the driver's side. Momentarily depressing the driver's side window button in the up or down position allows the window to move upward or downward until the window is fully lowered or raised. If the window switch is held in the down position for more than one half second, the window will stop when the button is released. A relay prevents window operation unless the ignition switch is in RUN or ACC position.
