Pinion Preload: Probe
- Remove steering gear. See STEERING GEAR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Place steering gear in vise. Using an INCH-lb. torque wrench and Pinion Torque Adapter (T92C-3504-AH), measure pinion preload.
- At neutral position, zero to 180 degrees, preload should be 9-12 INCH lbs. (1.0-1.4 N.m). In any other position, preload should be 15 INCH lbs. (1.6 N.m). If preload is not within specifications, loosen adjusting cover lock nut.
- Using Yoke Plug Adapter (T81P-3504-U), tighten adjusting cover to 87 INCH lbs. (9 N.m), then loosen adjusting cover. Tighten adjusting cover again to 39-48 INCH lbs. (4.4-5.4 N.m), then loosen it 45 degrees. DO NOT allow adjusting cover to turn.
- Install adjusting cover lock nut. Use Yoke Lock Nut Wrench (T88C-3504-KH), to tighten adjusting cover lock nut while holding adjusting cover to 36-43 INCH lbs. (49-59 N.m).
