Description & Operation
The remote keyless entry system has 4 main components; control module located in trunk (behind glove box on Continental and Mark VIII), 5 button keypad, antenna located in wiring harness (behind "C" pillar trim panel on Continental) and the 4 button transmitter. The control module performs the following functions:
- Unlocks driver's door, all doors, trunk and locks all doors.
- Arms and disarms anti-theft system, if equipped.
- Turns on interior, keyhole and keypad lights.
- Activates and deactivates anti-theft horns and flashes parking lights.
- Activates battery saver, which removes power from courtesy lights 45 minutes after last input to control module.
- Stores temporary alternate entry code.
Transmitter can be reprogrammed. All transmitters for vehicle must be set at same time. The remote keyless entry system receives inputs from the following:
- Front door handles
- Driver's seat sensor
- Transmission back-up light switch
- Ignition switch
- Door lock/unlock switches
- Courtesy light switches
- Door ajar switches
- Keypad
- Program connector
- Transmitter
Control module sends outputs to the following:
- Keypad lights
- Convenience lights
- Door lock actuators
- Trunk release solenoid
- Courtesy and keyhole lights
- Horn relay
- Autolamp relay
- Anti-theft module (if equipped)
To unlock driver's door using keypad, enter permanent factory code or owner's alternate code. This will disarm anti-theft system, if equipped. To unlock passenger's doors, press the 3/4 button within 5 seconds of unlocking driver's door or trunk. To unlock trunk, press 5/6 button within 5 seconds of unlocking driver's or passenger's door. To turn on interior lights, lift either front door handle or press any button on keypad.
To program temporary code, press 1/2 button within 5 seconds of last command. Enter any 5 digit code within 5 seconds. To lock all doors, press 7/8 and 9/0 buttons at the same time. Anti-theft system will arm. All doors will automatically lock if autolock feature is activated, driver's seat is occupied, all doors are closed, ignition switch is in RUN position and transmission is in Reverse. After initial lock, all doors will relock when any door is opened and then closed, except if driver's seat is empty or ignition is off.
To activate autolock mode, enter 5 digit permanent entry code into keypad. Within 5 seconds, press and hold 7/8 button. Within 5 seconds, press and release 3/4 button. With 5 seconds of pressing 3/4 button, release 7/8 button. To deactivate autolock mode, repeat above procedure. To unlock driver's door using transmitter, press UNLOCK button once. Anti-theft system will disarm. To unlock all doors, press UNLOCK button twice. To unlock trunk, press Blue TRUNK button once.
To turn on interior and keyhole lights, press UNLOCK, TRUNK or PANIC buttons. To lock all doors, press LOCK button once. Anti-theft system will arm. To confirm that doors did lock, press LOCK button again within 5 seconds of first depression. Horn will beep and lock doors again. To activate personal security alarm, press Red PANIC button. Horn will beep and parking lights will flash for a maximum of 3 minutes.
To deactivate personal security alarm, press Red PANIC button again or turn ignition on.
