Steering Gear: Installation
- Install NEW plastic seals on hydraulic line fittings. Install gear on mounting spikes. Install hydraulic lines. Install front rubber insulators. Ensure rubber insulators are pushed completely inside gear housing before installing mounting bolts.
- Insert pinion shaft into flexible coupling. Install 2 mounting bolts, insulator washers and nuts. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Check and adjust wheel alignment as required. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES
article in the WHEEL ALIGNMENT section.
- Rotate pinion shaft to full left turn stop. Position right load wheel to full left turn. Start right side of gear through opening in right apron. Install gear until left tie rod clears all components and can be raised upward to clear left apron opening. Raise gear and insert left side through apron opening. Guide power steering hoses into position at the same time.
- Rotate gear so pinion shaft enters dash panel opening. With an assistant guiding intermediate shaft from inside vehicle, insert pinion shaft into intermediate shaft coupling. Install intermediate shaft clamp bolts finger tight.
- Install gear mounting insulators and brackets. Ensure flat in left mounting area is parallel to dash panel. Tighten left upper bracket bolt halfway. Tighten left lower bolt, left upper bolt and right bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
. Attach tie rod ends to steering knuckles.
- Connect pressure and return lines at steering gear. Using crowfoot wrench, install pressure switch. Tighten coupling clamp bolt at gear pinion shaft. Tighten upper intermediate shaft clamp bolt. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Check and adjust wheel alignment as required. For wheel alignment information see WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES
article in the WHEEL ALIGNMENT section.
