Pinpoint Test O - Tachometer Inoperative/Inaccurate

  1. Turn ignition off. Unplug 16-pin connector from instrument cluster. Unplug 3-pin distributor connector (2.5L) or ignition coil connector (2.0L). Measure resistance of Green wire between instrument connector terminal No. 5 and distributor or coil connector. Measure insulation resistance between same wire and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, and insulation resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If measurements are not as specified, repair Green wire.
  2. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between the following pairs of terminals:
    • Tachometer "+" terminal and instrument cluster pin 6A
    • Tachometer "-" terminal and instrument cluster pin 9A
    • Tachometer TA terminal and instrument cluster pin 5B

If all measurements are less than 5 ohms, replace tachometer. If any measurement is not less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit.
