Pinpoint Test L - Speedometer/Odometer Inoperative
NOTE:
Improper tire size will cause error in speed indication.
- Remove instrument cluster, leaving connectors attached. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect AC voltmeter to speedometer SP+ and SP- terminals on back of speedometer. Drive vehicle at speeds specified in SPEEDOMETER INPUT SPECIFICATIONS table. If voltages are not approximately as specified, go to next step. If voltages are approximately as specified, replace speedometer.SPEEDOMETER INPUT SPECIFICATIONS
Speed (MPH) Approximate AC Voltage 0 0 10 2.10 20 3.40 30 4.25 40 4.80 50 5.20 60 5.50 - Turn ignition off. Unplug 14-pin connector from instrument cluster. Measure resistance between harness connector pin No. 10 (Orange/Black wire) and Brown/Light Green wire at vehicle speed sensor, located at transmission. Measure resistance between harness connector pin No. 7 (Blue/White wire) and vehicle speed sensor. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms, repair appropriate wire.
- Measure resistance between harness connector pin No. 7 (Blue/White wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms, repair Black wire to ground.
- Test speed sensor. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Repair as necessary. If speed sensor is okay, replace instrument cluster printed circuit board.
