Emissions Compliance
Canada and some states or metropolitan areas in the United States require periodic emission tests. All Ford Motor Co. products have been designed to pass these tests. If a vehicle fails an emission test, it is probable that the engine temperature was not warm and stabilized prior to the test, or the vehicle had idled excessively long prior to the test.
Before starting any services, verify complaints of idle emission test failure by using test procedure of area that failed vehicle. The following encompasses most of the emissions measurement modes of current state idle test procedures:
- Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature and all accessories are turned off.
- Check emissions at idle.
- Operate engine at 2200-2800 RPM.
- Check emissions within 30 seconds.
- Return engine speed to idle.
- Check emissions within 30 seconds.
If any emission component is changed, Keep-Alive Memory (KAM) should be cleared before repeating state emission test procedure. See TESTS W/CODES - EEC 2.5L article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- Perform QUICK TEST. See TESTS W/CODES - EEC 2.5L article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- Check ignition system. See BASIC TESTING - 4-CYL article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- Check for vacuum leaks.
- Check fuel delivery. Refer to the appropriate I - SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC (2.5L) article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- Check EGR system. Refer to the appropriate I - SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC (2.5L) article and TESTS W/CODES - EEC 2.5L article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- Check PCV system.
- Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system. Proceed to appropriate I - SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC (2.5L) article and TESTS W/CODES - EEC 2.5L article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
- Check air intake system. Also, ensure throttle plate and linkages operate properly.
- Check for leaking or restricted exhaust system. Check condition of catalytic converter and air injection system.
- Check cooling system.
- Check engine compression. Check engine mechanical condition. Check timing belt, intake manifold gasket, camshaft and valves.
