Repairing Twisted Pair Wiring

NOTE: Data communication lines are very sensitive to moisture and oxidation. The following procedure must be used to ensure optimum performance of module communications network. Durability of splice is dependent on sealing the repair. Regular heat shrink tubing is NOT sufficient, heat shrink tubing containing hot melt wax is required.
  1. When performing a repair, ensure communication network wires are twisted at a rate of 33-40 winds per meter. The twists should start within approximately 4" (10 cm) from any connector. Use only 20 AWG standard wire gauge for repairs.
  2. Strip 3/4" (19 mm) of insulation from one wire. Strip 1-1/2" insulation from other wire. See Fig 1 . Place a 2" (51 mm) section of hot melt wax type heat shrink tubing over one wire.
  3. Twist 1/2" of the stripped portion of the wires together. Solder connection using resin core RMA solder. DO NOT  use acid core solder.
  4. Bend wire to accommodate heat shrink tubing installation. See Fig 1 . Position heat shrink tubing over repair area. Using a heat gun, evenly heat the shrink tubing until wax oozes from ends of shrink tubing. Remove heat.
