SUBJECT

Owner Notification Program 01M07: Certain 1995, 1996, and 1997 Model Year Contour and Mystique Vehicles - Heater Blower Switch Extended Coverage

  4. PROGRAM TERMS: This additional coverage program extends the coverage on the heater blower switch to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the vehicle's warranty start date, whichever occurs first. This coverage will automatically transfer to subsequent owners. If a vehicle already has more than 150,000 miles, this coverage will last until December 31, 2001.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 1995, 1996, and 1997 Contour and Mystique vehicles built at Kansas City and Cuautitlan Assembly Plants from August 1, 1994 through February 28, 1997.

REASONS FOR THIS PROGRAM

On the affected vehicles, the heater blower switch may lose function in one or more of the blower switch positions. If this should occur, defrost performance may be affected.

SERVICE ACTION

If the heater blower switch in any of the affected vehicles fails to function in one or more of the blower positions, the dealer will replace the switch and connector at no charge to the customer.

Certain 1995, 1996, and 1997 Model Year Contour and Mystique Vehicles

Heater Blower Switch Extended Coverage

OASIS

You must use OASIS to determine if a vehicle is eligible for this program.

NOTE: Submission of an "M" program claim will not remove the vehicle from OASIS because vehicles affected are eligible for repeat repairs if the affected condition recurs during the program time and mileage period.

CLAIMS PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION

  • Enter claims using DWE.
  • Refer to ACESII Manual for claims preparation and submission information.

OWNER REFUNDS

Ford Motor Company will only refund the cost of repairs for the heater blower switch made before the date of the Owner Letter (or after the date of the Owner Letter if an emergency repair was made away from the servicing dealer).

All supporting documentation must be retained in accordance with the Warranty and Policy Manual.

ATTACHMENT III

OWNER NOTIFICATION PROGRAM 01M07 

HEATER BLOWER SWITCH AND CONNECTOR REPLACEMENT 

OVERVIEW

When performing this service procedure, you will:

  • replace the existing blower switch wire harness connector with a redesigned connector
  • replace the existing blower switch
  • verify the repair

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. CAUTION:  Do not use excessive force when installing the Radio Removing Tool. This may damage the retaining clips, making radio chassis removal difficult.

    Remove the radio.

    • Record the radio stations.
    • Install the Radio Removing Tool T87P-19061-A into the radio face plate.
    • Push the tool in approximately 25.4 mm (1 inch) to release the retaining clips.
    • Apply a slight spreading force on the tool and pull the radio out.
    • Disconnect the radio connectors.
  2. Remove the A/C control finish panel. See Fig 1.
    • Contour: Gently pull the finish panel away from the instrument panel to disengage the retaining clips and disconnect the dimmer switch electrical connector.
    • Mystique: Open the ash receptacle and remove the two (2) retaining screws and disconnect the dimmer switch electrical connector.

  3. Remove the A/C control retaining screws and remove the A/C control.
    CAUTION: Cut and splice only one wire at a time. The wire colors on the new blower switch connector do not match the existing wiring harness colors.
  4. Install the new blower switch connector kit.
    1. Obtain Blower Switch Connector Repair Kit # F5RZ-14A411-AA.
    2. Select the first wire to be spliced from the switch wire harness and cut it as close as possible to the blower switch connector. See Fig 2.

    3. Select the corresponding wire from the new blower switch connector.
    4. Strip 1/4 inch insulation from the selected wires.
    5. Install the appropriate splice connector using crimp tool # AD1522 or equivalent ratchet action crimp tool.
    6. Test the integrity of all splices after crimping. Grasp the wires at each splice and pull gently. If any wire is not attached securely, replace the splice connector and crimp firmly.
    7. Repeat steps B through F for the remaining wires, one at a time.
    8. Heat each splice connector thoroughly until the tubing shrinks and adhesive flows from each end. Use Rotunda Heat Gun R07-10300 or equivalent. See Fig 3.

  5. Remove the old blower switch.
    • Pull the switch knob off.
    • Remove the switch retaining screw.
  6. Install the new blower switch.
    • Install the new switch and the retaining screw.
    • Install the switch knob.
  7. Connect the new blower switch connector to the new blower switch.
  8. Check operation of the blower motor.
  9. Install the A/C control and retaining screws.
  10. Install the A/C control finish panel.
    • Contour: Push the finish panel retaining clip into place in the instrument panel.
    • Mystique: Position the finish panel on the instrument panel and install the two (2) retaining screws through the ash receptacle.
  11. Connect the radio connectors and install the radio.
  12. Program the radio stations.
