Test D: Wipers Inoperative At Low Speed

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on. Set wiper switch for low speed operation. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Measure voltage between Yellow/Red wire and Dark Blue/Orange wire at wiper motor wiring harness connector. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step 6).
  2. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Dark Blue/Orange wire between wiper motor connector and ground. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to step 4).
  3. Disconnect Interval Wiper/Washer Module (IWWM) connector. Measure resistance of Dark Blue/Orange wire between wiper motor connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace IWWM. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/Orange wire. After repair, retest system.
  4. Disconnect IWWM connector. Measure resistance of Dark Blue/Orange wire between IWWM connector and wiper motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Dark Blue/Orange wire and retest system.
  5. Set wiper switch for low speed operation. Measure resistance between IWWM connector terminals No. 1 and 7. See Figure . If resistance is 3500-4500 ohms, replace IWWM. If resistance is not 3500-4500 ohms, replace wiper switch. After repair, retest system.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect wiper linkage. Reconnect wiper motor connector. Turn ignition on. Set wiper switch for low speed operation. If wiper motor operates, check for binding or damaged wiper linkage. Repair as necessary. If wiper motor does not operate, replace wiper motor. After repair, retest system.
