Description & Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Tracer and 1997 Ford Escort. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

There are 2 levels of door lock control systems used; driver's door only remote system (system "A") and full 4-door remote system (system "B"). The remote entry feature will not function when the ignition switch is in ACC or ON position.

The driver's door only system has no power door lock switches. The locking system is controlled through the Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module (also called control module) by signals sent from the remote transmitter. The system will lock and unlock the driver's door, release the trunk latch (sedan), or lock and unlock the liftgate (wagons).

The full 4-door system is controlled through the RAP module by the left and right front power door lock switches or signals sent from the remote transmitter. The system will lock and unlock all doors, release the trunk latch (sedans), or lock and unlock the liftgate (wagons).

Both systems may consist of left and right front power door lock switches, door latch actuators, power door lock relay, antenna, RAP module, trunk release solenoid, liftgate latch actuator and 3-button (sedan) or 4-button (wagon) transmitter.
