Test C: Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor Does Not Respond To Scan Tester
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Lincoln Continental. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disable air bag restraint system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
- Disconnect 84-pin harness connector C217. Harness connector C217 is located behind driver's side of instrument panel. See Figure .
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 59 (Light Blue/White wire) on male side of harness connector C217 and terminal No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) on Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure and Figure .
- If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit on Light Blue/White wire between DLC and harness connector C217. Repeat TEST A.
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire) on DLC. See Figure .
- If resistance more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground on Light Blue/White wire to DLC. Repeat TEST A .
- Reinstall negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, check voltage between terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire) on DLC.
- If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to battery voltage on Light Blue/White wire to DLC. Repeat TEST A .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Black 12-pin connector C276 from air bag diagnostic monitor. Air bag diagnostic monitor is located behind instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure .
- Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 59 (Light Blue/White wire) on female side of harness connector C217 and terminal No. 12 (Light Blue/White wire) on connector C276. See Figure and Fig 1 .
- If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open circuit on Light Blue/White wire between harness connector C217 and connector C276. Reactivate air bag restraint system. Repeat TEST A .
- Reinstall harness connector C217. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire) on DLC.
- If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground on Light Blue/White wire to terminal No. 7 on DLC. Repeat TEST A .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using voltmeter, check voltage between terminals No. 7 (Light Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (Black wire) on DLC. If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to battery voltage on Light Blue/White wire to DLC. Repeat TEST A .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Inspect pins and wire connections on connector C276 for air bag diagnostic monitor. If pins and wire connections are okay, go to next step. If pins or wire connections are defective or damaged, disable air bag restraint system and repair pins or wire connections as necessary. Repeat TEST A .
- Inspect pins and wire connections on DLC. If pins and wire connections are okay, disable air bag restraint system and replace air bag diagnostic monitor. Repeat TEST A . If pins or wire connections are defective or damaged, disable air bag restraint system and repair pins or wire connections as necessary. Repeat TEST A .
