Test C: All Door Locks Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Tracer and 1997 Ford Escort. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Check DOOR LOCK fuse located in interior fuse panel. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to step 4). If fuse is blown, go to next step.
- Replace blown fuse. If DOOR LOCK fuse fails again, go to next step. If fuse does not fail, reinstall fuse and go to step 4).
- Disconnect door lock relay. See DOOR LOCK RELAY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and DOOR LOCK fuse socket top terminal (White/Green wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in White/Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM . If resistance is not less than 5 ohms, rein-stall fuse and go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and door lock relay connector terminal No. 5 (White/Green wire). See Figure . Voltage should be greater than 10 volts. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not greater than 10 volts, repair open in Green/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- Test door lock relay. See DOOR LOCK RELAY TEST under COMPONENT TESTS. If door lock relay is within specifications, go to next step. If door lock relay is not within specifications, replace relay.
- Measure resistance between ground and door lock relay connector terminal No. 4 (Gray wire) while pressing "L" button on each door lock switch. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms through each switch, go to ne xt step. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms through only one switch, go to TEST D. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms through both switches, repair Gray wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- Measure resistance between ground and door lock relay connector terminal No. 9 (Blue wire) while pressing "U" button on each door lock switch. See Figure . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistance is less than 5 ohms through each switch, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms through only one switch, go to TEST D. If resistance is not less than 5 ohms through both switches, repair Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- Measure resistance between door lock relay connector terminals No. 3 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 8 (Green/White wire). See Figure . Resistance should be 10-30 ohms. If resistance is as specified, system is okay. Return to SYSTEM TESTS SYMPTOM INDEX TABLE and re-evaluate symptoms. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between door lock relay connector terminals No. 3 (Green/Orange wire) and No. 6 (Red/White wire). See Figure . Resistance should be 10-30 ohms. If resistance is as specified, repair Green/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM . If resistance is not as specified, repair Green/Orange wire.
