ISSUE
Some 1998/99 Contour/Mystique and 1999 Cougar vehicles may require Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reprogramming when installing a replacement CD4E transaxle.
ACTION
Refer to the following text and RECALIBRATION CROSS REFERENCE CHART to determine if PCM reprogramming is required.
Check build date on vehicle:
- If build date is after 5/31/1998 for Contour/Mystique or after 6/11/1998 for Cougar, no PCM reprogramming is required. The PCM calibration has been updated during the manufacturing process.
- If the build date is through 5/31/1998 for Contour/Mystique or through 6/11/1998 for Cougar, PCM reprogramming is required.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. See Fig 1 . Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
