ISSUE

Some 1998/99 Contour/Mystique and 1999 Cougar vehicles may require Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reprogramming when installing a replacement CD4E transaxle.

ACTION

Refer to the following text and RECALIBRATION CROSS REFERENCE CHART  to determine if PCM reprogramming is required.

Check build date on vehicle:

NOTE: If TSB 98-13-11 , which incorporates PCM reprogramming and a revised transaxle servo rod and spring, has been performed, PCM reprogramming is not necessary. Be sure to check the vehicle for an updated Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS-8262) which states TSB 98-13-11 has been performed before reprogramming PCM.
NOTE: If PCM reprogramming was necessary, install an Authorized Modifications Decal.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. See Fig 1 . Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
