Filling The Steering System: Notes

  1. Fill the reservoir. Use Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose (ATF) XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent. See Figure.
  2. Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relay to disable the vehicle. See Figure.
  3. Raise the front wheels off the ground.
  4. CAUTION: Do not crank the engine for more than 15 seconds at a time. Allow the starter to cool for 1 minute before cranking again. Premature starter failure can occur.
  5. Turn the steering wheel from stop-to-stop while cranking the engine.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Fill the reservoir, be sure not to overfill. Use Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose (ATF) XT-2-QDX or MERCON® equivalent.
  8. Install the powertrain control module (PCM) relay. See Figure.
  9. NOTE: : If the power steering is noisy and accompanied by evidence of aerated fluid, it will be necessary to purge the power steering system. See PURGING THE STEERING SYSTEM .
  10. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). For additional information, See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC article under ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Run vehicle and check the system for leaks.
