Test A: No Communication With Generic Electronic Module (Gem)
NOTE:
Illustration of instrument panel fuse box connector where Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connects (connector C201) is not available from manufacturer at time of publication.
- Remove fuses No. 23 (5-amp), No. 20 (5-amp), No. 12 (5-amp) and No. 8 (5-amp) from instrument panel fuse box. If all fuses are okay, go to next step. If any fuse is blown, repair power distribution circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION section in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) harness connector C236. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 14 (Red/Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector C236. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM module from instrument panel fuse box, leaving all other GEM harness connectors connected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminals No. 5 and 10 at instrument panel where GEM was disconnected from. Battery voltage should exist. Measure voltage at terminals No. 14 at instrument panel where GEM was disconnected from while ignition switch is in START position. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace instrument panel fuse box.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect GEM harness connector C248. Measure resistance between ground and terminals No. 14 (Black wire) and No. 25 (Black wire) at GEM harness connector C248. See Fig 2 . If both resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If either resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire.
- Disconnect GEM harness connector C223. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Black/White wire) at GEM harness connector C223. See Fig 3 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 22 (Black/White wire) at GEM harness connector C223. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair module communications problem. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire.
