Traction Control Indicator Is Inoperative

  1. Disconnect ABS control module connector. Measure resistance of Black/White wire between ABS control module connector and ground while pressing and releasing traction control switch. If resistance is less than 5 ohms with switch depressed, and more than 10 k/ohms with switch released, go to step 4)  . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect traction control switch 8-pin connector. Measure resistance of Black/White wire between ABS control module connector and traction control switch connector. Measure resistance of Black/White wire between ABS control module connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between switch connector and ABS connector, and more than 10 k/ohms between ABS connector and ground. Go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair Black/White wire. Repeat self-test.
  3. Measure resistance of Black wire between traction control switch connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace traction control switch. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black wire. Repeat self-test.
  4. Turn ignition on. Momentarily connect fused (10-amp) jumper wire between ABS control module connector Black/Green wire terminal and ground, while observing traction control indicator. If indicator illuminates, replace Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). Repeat self-test. If indicator does not come on, go to next step.
  5. On Contour and Mystique, turn ignition off. Disconnect traction control switch connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage of Black/Green wire between traction control switch and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Black/Green wire. Repeat self-test.
  6. On Cougar, turn ignition off. Disconnect traction control switch connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage of Green/Black wire between traction control switch and ground. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair Green/Black wire. Repeat self-test.
  7. On Contour and Mystique, turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Green/Black wire between ABS control module connector and traction control switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace traction control switch. repeat self-test. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Green/Black wire. Repeat self-test.
  8. On Cougar, turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Black/Green wire between ABS control module connector and traction control switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace traction control switch. repeat self-test. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair Black/Green wire. Repeat self-test.
