Test F: Speed Dependent Wipers Do Not Operate Correctly
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Using NGS tester, retrieve continuous DTCs stored in GEM. Clear continuous DTCs. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and note all DTCs. If DTC P0500 exists, go to step 3. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If DTC B1342 exists, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe PID SPEEDWP. If PID SPEEDWP indicates ACTIVE go to next step. If PID SPEEDWP does not indicate ACTIVE, enable GEM SPEED DEPENDENT WIPER. See SPEED DEPENDENT WIPERS under PROGRAMMING. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Using NGS tester, observe GEM PID VSS while driving vehicle from 0 to 55 MPH. If GEM PID VSS values do not agree with speedometer, go to step 5 . If GEM PID VSS values agree with speedometer, go to next step.
- Perform message center self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS (MESSAGE CENTER) . If message center is receiving vehicle speed signal, go to step 6. If message center is not receiving vehicle speed signal, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect central junction box harness connector C270b and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C174. Measure resistance in Gray/Black wire between central junction block harness connector C270b terminal No. 21 and PCM harness connector C174 terminal No. 68. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Gray/Black wire between central junction block and PCM. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor system tests okay, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, diagnose OSS sensor problem. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Remove Generic Electronic Module (GEM). See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between central junction box connector C270b terminal No. 21 (component side) and GEM internal connector C201d terminal No. 18. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace central junction box. See CENTRAL JUNCTION BOX under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system.
