Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to DRAINING .
  2. CAUTION: The brake aspirator tube must be fully seated in the air cleaner outlet pipe or a vacuum leak will occur.

  3. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) and brake aspirator tubes from the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  4. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  5. Loosen the air cleaner outlet tube clamp at the electronic throttle body.
    • To install, tighten to 5 N.m (44 lb-in).
  6. NOTE: No tools are needed to remove or install the air cleaner housing. Removal or installation should be carried out using hands only.
  7. Remove the air cleaner housing cover and outlet tube assembly.
  8. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  9. Remove the hairpin clip and the ECT sensor.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Use the alignment notches to correctly align the air cleaner housing cover to the air cleaner tray.
    • Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean engine coolant.
