Inspection and Verification
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
If a module is installed it must be reconfigured. Refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK
.
- Verify the customer concern by operating the vehicle to duplicate the condition.
- Verify the stoplamps operate correctly by applying and releasing the brake pedal with the ignition switch in the OFF position. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING . If the stoplamps operate correctly, proceed to the next step.
- Verify that the PRNDL operates correctly on the instrument cluster. If the PRNDL does not operate correctly, refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES . If the PRNDL operates correctly, proceed to the next step.
- Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply:VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

- If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- Check that the program card is correctly installed.
- Check the connection of the data link connector to the vehicle.
- Check that the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
- If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool manufacturer's manual.
- Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If diagnostic tool responds with:
- SCP or ISO; all electronic control units, no response/not equipped, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
- No response/not equipped for the ABS module, Go To PINPOINT TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE ABS MODULE .
- System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), clear the continuous DTCs, cycle the ignition switch OFF and ON, then carry out the self-test diagnostics for the ABS module.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)/TRACTION CONTROL AND ABS/TRACTION CONTROL WITH ADVANCE TRAC®/IVD DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX With or Without Advance Trac®/IVD Module to continue diagnostics.
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHART to continue diagnostics.
