Steering Wheel Rotation Sensor: Removal

  1. Remove steering column. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING. To remove 2 multifunction switches, depress retaining tangs and lift switches upward. Detach driver air bag module. Release 3 air bag module clips. Disconnect module electrical connector. Remove driver air bag module. Disconnect speed control electrical connector (if equipped). Remove steering wheel retaining bolt and steering wheel. Remove tolerance ring.
  2. NOTE: Ensure air bag sliding contact is not allowed to rotate. Secure in central position with a piece of suitable tape.
  3. Using a thin-blade screwdriver, release 2 retaining clips. Remove air bag sliding contact. Release steering column locking lever. Fully extend steering column. Mark both halves of steering column before separating. Remove steering column Allen bolt. Separate steering column into 2 halves. Remove steering wheel rotation sensor clamp screws. Using a thin-blade screwdriver, depress locking tangs and remove steering wheel rotation sensor clamp. Remove steering wheel rotation sensor retaining screws and sensor.
