Description & Operation

NOTE: This article applies only to 4-door Explorer and Mountaineer models. For Explorer Sport and Explorer Sport Trac testing procedures, see POWER DOOR LOCKS & REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - EXPLORER SPORT & EXPLORER SPORT TRAC article.

NOTE: Door unlock relay and door lock relay may be referred to as all unlock and all lock relay.

The remote keyless entry system consists of a Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module, Generic Electronic Module (GEM), driver unlock relay (if equipped with 2-step unlocking), door unlock relay, door lock relay, keyless entry keypad, hand-held transmitter(s) and necessary wiring. Up to 4 transmitters can be programmed to vehicle. Remote keyless entry will not function while ignition switch is in RUN or ACC positions. The RAP module, when initiated by remote transmitter, performs the following functions:

Unlocks driver's door (if equipped with 2-step unlocking).
Locks and unlocks all doors and liftgate.
Enables panic alarm (security feature to sound horn and flash exterior lights).
Illuminates interior and key hole lights through commands to Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
Arms and disarms anti-theft system (if equipped).
Sounds horn once when remote transmitter LOCK button is depressed twice and all doors are closed.
Sounds horn twice when remote transmitter LOCK button is depressed twice and any door or liftgate window is ajar.
Allows up to 4 remote transmitters to be programmed, which depending on order programmed, will set memory seat to corresponding position when driver door is unlocked using remote transmitter.

To unlock driver's door, press UNLOCK button on transmitter. This also disarms anti-theft system and illuminates interior lights. To unlock all doors and liftgate, press UNLOCK button twice within 5 seconds. To lock all doors, press LOCK button once. This also arms anti-theft system. To confirm all doors are locked, press LOCK button again within 5 seconds of first press. Horn will sound, exterior lights will flash and doors will lock again. To activate security alarm, press PANIC button. Horn will sound and exterior lights will flash for a maximum of 2 minutes 45 seconds. To deactivate security alarm, press PANIC button again or turn ignition switch to ACC or RUN position.

Keyless entry keypad can be used to unlock driver door (if equipped with 2-step unlocking), or lock and unlock all doors and liftgate. Keypad and all illuminated components will illuminate with first button pressed. Illuminated entry can be programmed to turn on/off with use of keypad. See KEYPAD under PROGRAMMING. The system receiver assembly is programmed at the factory with a permanent entry code, which can be obtained from customer wallet card or can be accessed using scan tool under RAP KEYCODE PID menu.

Autolock feature will lock all doors when all vehicle doors, liftgate window and liftgate are fully closed, ignition key is in RUN position, driver shifts into or passed through Reverse, and brake pedal is released. If any door is opened and then closed, autolock will repeat. Autolock can be enabled/disabled as preferred.

If equipped with 2-step unlocking, to unlock driver's door, enter permanent factory code or driver's alternate code. To unlock passenger door(s) and liftgate, press 3/4 button within 5 seconds of unlocking driver door.

If not equipped with 2-step locking, to unlock all doors and liftgate, enter permanent factory code or driver's alternate code. To lock all doors, press 7/8 and 9/0 buttons simultaneously. It is not necessary to enter 5-digit code first. Courtesy lights will also turn off.
