System Pre-Check

NOTE: Performing pretest checks will identify relatively simple repairs and prepare vehicle for further diagnosis. Warning light faults are also identified and repaired using pretest checks.

  1. Verify Complaint

Operate vehicle, applying brakes under different conditions to duplicate complaint. Physically inspect and repair (as needed) the following mechanical and electrical items:
    • Parking brake cable.
    • Tire inflation.
    • Mismatched wheels or tires.
    • Battery junction box fuses and fuse No. 101 (40-amp), fuse No. 102 (40-amp), fuse junction panel, and fuse No. 10 (10-amp).
    • Sensor, ABCM, hydraulic unit and other connectors and wiring connections.
    • Wiring condition for opens or shorts.
  2. Connect Scan Tool

Attach New Generation Star (NGS) tester or equivalent scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under instrument panel. Select vehicle, ensure program card is installed, check connections to vehicle, and check ignition switch position.
  3. Scan Tool Non-Communication

If NGS or scan tool will not communicate with vehicle, refer to equipment manufacturer's manual for further steps to take.
  4. Data Link Diagnostic Test

Carry out appropriate Data Link Diagnostic Test. If scan tool reads CKT914, CKT915, or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, see appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If scan tool reads NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Anti-Lock Brake Control Module (ABCM), go to TEST A  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If scan tool reads SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and perform appropriate tests. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  table.
  5. No DTCs Retrieved

If no DTCs are retrieved, problem may be intermittent. See symptom diagnosis chart to continue diagnosis. See Figure.
