Test A: System Overcharges
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure and record battery voltage. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage drop between positive battery terminal and generator "A" terminal screw. See Fig 1
andFig 2
. Connect positive voltmeter lead to positive battery terminal and negative lead to generator "A" terminal screw. If voltage drop is less than .25 volt, go to next step. If voltage drop is .25 volt or more, repair open or high resistance in White/Green wire between generator and battery junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 1-pin generator connector. Disconnect voltage regulator connector. Measure resistance of Orange wire between generator 1-pin generator connector and voltage regulator connector terminal "S". See Fig 3
. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
. Check system operation.
- Check for loose connections or dirty mating surfaces between generator and regulator, and between generator and engine. Check battery ground cable between battery and engine for poor connection. Repair as necessary. Check system operation. If all connections are clean and tight, and symptoms remain, replace voltage regulator. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
