In-Vehicle Repair: Camshaft: Installation

    NOTE: Coat the cylinder head cam bore with engine oil prior to camshaft installation.

  1. Install the camshaft through the rear of the cylinder head.
  2. Install the camshaft thrust plate.

  3. Install a new camshaft oil seal. For additional information, refer to CAMSHAFT SEAL .
  4. Install a new blanking plug with sealer.

  5. Attach the air cleaner housing bracket.

  6. Install the engine rear mounting.

  7. Lower the engine.
  8. Remove the special tools.

  9. Install the timing belt. For additional information, refer to TIMING BELT .
    10. CAUTION: Color codes on valve tappets must index with oil feed holes in the cylinder head.
  10. Install the valve tappets using Hypoid oil.
    1. Install the valve tappets.
    2. Install the valve tappet guide plates.
    3. Install the valve tappet guide retainers.

    11. NOTE: Check that the rocker guides are sitting correctly.

  11. Install the rocker arms.
  12. Install the valve cover.

  13. Connect the fresh air and positive crankcase ventilation hoses.
    • Make sure that the positive crankcase ventilation hose is secured.

  14. Install the EI coil.
    1. Connect the electrical connector.
    2. Install the bolts.

  15. Install the air cleaner intake pipe.

  16. Install the air cleaner housing.
    1. Connect the MAF electrical connector.
    2. Attach the air cleaner intake pipe.
    • Push the air cleaner housing into the rubber bushing.

  17. Install the battery tray.
    1. Install the positive and negative cables.
    2. Tighten the bolts.
    3. Clip on the wiring harness.
    4. Connect and attach the electrical connector.

  18. Install the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  19. Standard finishing operations:
    • Check fluid levels and correct if necessary.
