Acceleration Control

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and 2004 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The engine management system electronically operates the throttle of the engine in response to throttle pedal movements initiated by the driver. The accelerator pedal is less sensitive in the 4x4 LOW (4WD Low) range than in the 4x4 HIGH (4WD High) range. This is to improve vehicle control when operating on very rough terrain. In the event of a system failure, the engine management system provides a "limp home" mode which allows the car to be driven with limited performance.
