Removal And Installation: Tie-Rod: Removal

  1. Remove the steering gear. For additional information, refer to STEERING GEAR .
  2. NOTE: Make a note of the number of turns required to remove the tie-rod end.
  3. Remove the tie-rod end and lock nut.
    1. Remove the tie-rod end.

    2. Remove the tie-rod end lock nut.
  4. Remove the boot.
    1. Remove the clamps.

    2. Remove the boot.
      • Disconnect the breather pipe (if equipped).
  5. Rotate the pinion to expose the rack gear teeth.

  6. CAUTION: To counter the extensive torque forces required to remove the tie-rod, clamp the rack gear teeth in a suitable vise. Do not clamp the steering gear body.
    CAUTION: Make sure vise jaw protectors are used.
    NOTE: It may be necessary to secure the rack gear teeth with the steering gear in the vertical position to facilitate removal of the tie-rod.

  7. Secure the steering gear in a suitable vise. Using a suitable pipe wrench, remove the tie-rod.
