Removal And Installation: Tie-Rod: Removal
- Remove the steering gear. For additional information, refer to STEERING GEAR .
- Remove the tie-rod end and lock nut.
- Remove the tie-rod end.
- Remove the tie-rod end lock nut.
- Remove the boot.
- Remove the clamps.
- Remove the boot.
- Disconnect the breather pipe (if equipped).
- Rotate the pinion to expose the rack gear teeth.
- Secure the steering gear in a suitable vise. Using a suitable pipe wrench, remove the tie-rod.
NOTE:
Make a note of the number of turns required to remove the tie-rod end.
CAUTION:
To counter the extensive torque forces required to remove the tie-rod, clamp the rack gear teeth in a suitable vise. Do not clamp the steering gear body.
CAUTION:
Make sure vise jaw protectors are used.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to secure the rack gear teeth with the steering gear in the vertical position to facilitate removal of the tie-rod.
