Test J: Security Identification Does Not Match Between Instrument Cluster & Powertrain Control Module

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article. If DTC B2139 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B2139 is not retrieved, system is okay at this time.
  2. Perform security access procedure for instrument cluster. See KEY PROGRAMMING - SECURITY ACCESS PROCEDURE  under PROGRAMMING. Using WDS or NGS tester, select Ford Service Function (FSF) card PARAMETER RESET command for instrument cluster. Use diagnostic card for PCM active command KEEP ALIVE MEMORY RESET. Select FSF card PARAMETER RESET command for PCM. Then go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position for 3 seconds. Clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article. If DTC B2139 is retrieved, go to next step. If any DTCs other than B2139 are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time.
  4. Verify PCM calibration is correct for vehicle. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - EEC-V - GASOLINE & NGV article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If calibration is correct, repeat step  3. If DTC B2139 still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Cycle ignition switch to RUN position using 2 encoded ignition keys. Return to step  1. If DTC B2139 still exists, replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, clear DTCs and repeat self-test.
