Inspection & Verification

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2002 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify customer's original problem by operating system in question. Inspect vehicle for any obvious electrical component wiring or connector damage. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Check related fuses for system in question.
  2. Inspect 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) pins for damage. See Fig 1. DLC is located under instrument panel between steering column and radio. See Figure. If pins are okay, go to next step. If pins are faulty, repair or replace as necessary and go to next step.
  3. If problem still exists after performing inspection, connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to DLC. Select vehicle to be tested from WDS or NGS tester menu. If WDS or NGS tester does not communicate with vehicle, ensure program card is properly installed and is correct version. Check WDS or NGS tester cable connections and ensure ignition switch is in RUN position. If WDS or NGS tester still does not communicate with vehicle, perform TEST K: NO MODULE/NETWORK COMMUNICATION  under SYSTEM TESTS. If WDS or NGS tester communicates with vehicle, perform data link diagnostic procedure. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST .
