Sensor Failure

NOTE: Run the vehicle through a car wash to aid in observing electrical problems that can occur only when the system is wet.
  1. Disconnect the suspect wheel speed sensor.
  2. NOTE: Use 88 Digital Multimeter with the minimum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
  3. Check the harness for short to ground. Monitor the resistance between the ABS module C135 pins and ground as follows:
RESISTANCE BETWEEN ABS MODULE C135 PINS AND GROUND

Sensor ABS Module C135 Pins Circuits
Left front wheel speed sensor 10 521 (TN/OG)
Right front wheel speed sensor 11 514 (YE/RD)
Right rear axle speed sensor 13 523 (RD/PK)
Left rear axle speed sensor 12 518 (LG/RD)
Left front wheel speed sensor 1 522 (TN/BK)
Right front wheel speed sensor 2 516 (YE/BK)
Right rear axle speed sensor 4 524 (PK/BK)
Left rear axle speed sensor 3 519 (LG/BK)
    • Drive over rough roads at various speeds.
    • If there is continuity between either circuit and ground, repair the circuit for a short to ground.
  4. NOTE: Connect jumper securely to the suspect sensor connector, wire harness side.
NOTE: Use 88 Digital Multimeter with the maximum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
  5. Check harness for open circuit. Connect a jumper between the two pins on the suspect sensor connector, wire harness side. Monitor the resistance between the ABS module C135 pins as follows:
RESISTANCE BETWEEN ABS MODULE C135 PINS

Sensor ABS Module C135 Pins Circuits
    Left front wheel speed sensor 10 and 1 521 (TN/OG) and 522 (TN/BK)
    Right front wheel speed sensor 11 and 2 514 (YE/RD) and 516 (YE/BK)
    Right rear axle speed sensor 13 and 4 523 (RD/PK) and 524 (PK/BK)
    Left rear axle speed sensor 12 and 3 518 (LG/RD) and 519 (LG/BK)
    • Drive over rough roads at various speeds.
    • If there is an open circuit detected between pins, repair the circuit(s) for an open circuit.
  6. NOTE: Use 88 Digital Multimeter with the maximum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
  7. Check suspect sensor electrical connector.
    • Monitor the resistance between suspect wheel speed sensor pins (component side) while wiggling the electrical connector.
    • If the resistance is above 2,200 ohms, install a new wheel speed sensor.
    • NOTE: Use 88 Digital Multimeter with the minimum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
    • Monitor the resistance between suspect wheel speed sensor pins (component side) while wiggling the electrical connector.
    • If the resistance is below 1,710 ohms, install a new wheel speed sensor.
    • NOTE: Use 88 Digital Multimeter with the minimum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
    • Monitor the resistance between the two wheel speed sensor pins (component side) and ground on the highest resistance scale of the meter while wiggling the electrical connector.
    • If the meter shows anything but open circuit, install a new wheel speed sensor.
