Shift Cable: Windstar

  1. Place gearshift lever in "OD" position. Hang a 3 lb. (1.4 kg) weight from gearshift lever. Position the air inlet cover aside. Loosen the clamps (1). Separate the air inlet cover (2), from the tube and position the air inlet cover aside. See Fig 1. Raise and support vehicle. Using a screwdriver, pry shift cable (1), from shift control lever on transaxle. See Fig 2. Pull shift cable adjustment lock tab (2), outward to unlock. Ensure adjuster body moves freely.
  2. Position manual control lever (3), in "OD" position. "OD" position is obtained by rotating manual control lever (3), clockwise until travel stops, and then turn manual control lever counterclockwise 2 detents. Connect cable to shift control lever. Push in lock tab to lock adjustment sleeve in position. Lower vehicle.
  3. Remove weight from gearshift lever. Check for park gear engagement. Start engine and ensure indicated gear positions match transaxle response. Verify vehicle only starts in Park and Neutral, and back-up lights operate. If operation is not okay, check Transmission Range (TR), sensor adjustment. See TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR .
