Removal And Installation: Column: Removal

NOTE: All steering column components are assembled with specific fasteners. They are designed with a thread-locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation.

    ALL VEHICLES 

  1. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable(s) (14301) and wait at least one minute to allow the depletion of the restraint system backup power supply. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. ALL EXCEPT COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

    WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation procedure.
  4. Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS) if equipped. For additional information refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
  5. ALL VEHICLES 

    WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the clockspring removal and installation procedure.
  6. Remove the clockspring. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  7. COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  8. Remove the nuts.

  9. Remove the nuts and the steering column support.

  10. ALL VEHICLES 

  11. Remove the screw and detach the transmission range indicator from the column.

  12. Disconnect the transmission shift cable loop from the shift tube hook.

  13. Remove the two retaining screws and two electrical connectors from the switch. Remove the multi-function switch (13K359) from the steering column.

  14. COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  15. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

  16. ALL EXCEPT COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  17. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

  18. ALL VEHICLES 

  19. Disconnect the shift cable from the selector lever pivot arm.
  20. Remove the shift cable from the steering column lower mounting bracket by pushing the tab on the cable in and sliding the cable off the bracket.
  21. Disconnect the ignition switch (11572).
  22. Lower the steering column bend bracket and disconnect the plastic electrical connectors.
  23. COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  24. While supporting the steering column, remove the retaining nuts.

  25. ALL EXCEPT COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  26. While supporting the steering column, remove the retaining nuts.

  28. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
