Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module: Removal

    All vehicles 

    CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilled on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Disconnect the low brake fluid warning indicator switch electrical connector.
    1. Pull back the tab.
    2. Depress the clips.
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  3. CAUTION: The brake fluid reservoir cap must not become contaminated.

  4. Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap.
  5. NOTE: It will be necessary to carry out this step on both sides in order to completely drain the brake fluid reservoir.
  6. Drain the brake fluid reservoir.
    1. Connect one end of a suitable piece of clear plastic pipe to the bleed nipple and place the other end into a suitable container.
    2. Loosen the bleed nipple.
    3. Depress the brake pedal until all the fluid is drained from the brake fluid reservoir.
    4. Tighten the bleed nipple.

  7. Install the brake fluid reservoir cap.
  8. Remove the air cleaner. .
  9. Remove the cleaner outlet tube.
  10. Disconnect the battery junction box (BJB) electrical connectors.

  11. Remove the BJB retaining screw.

  12. Detach the BJB from the BJB support bracket and position to one side.
    • Depress the locking tangs.

  13. Vehicles With Speed Control 

  14. Disconnect the speed control unit electrical connector.

  15. Detach the speed control unit.
    • Lower the unit.

  16. All Vehicles 

  17. Disconnect the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module electrical connector.
    1. Release the retainer.
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  18. CAUTION: Cap the brake tubes to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    NOTE: Make a note of the position of the brake tubes, to aid installation.

  19. Disconnect the brake tubes from the hydraulic control unit (HCU).
  20. Detach the brake tubes from the bulkhead.

  21. CAUTION: Cap the brake tubes to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.

  22. Remove the master cylinder to HCU brake tubes.
  23. Detach the wiring harness from the wheelhouse assembly.

  24. Detach the HCU and ABS module assembly from the support bracket.

  25. Remove the ABS module to HCU retaining bolts.

  26. Remove the ABS module.
