Timing Drive Components - Timing Belt: Removal

  1. Remove the spark plugs (12405).
  2. Remove the catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the bolts and the splash shield.

  4. Rotate the crankshaft (6303) to top dead center (No. 1 cylinder).
  5. Install the Crankshaft TDC Timing Peg.

  6. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the peg.

  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Remove the water pump pulley. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
  9. Remove the valve cover (6582). For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER .
  10. Remove the timing belt covers. For additional information, refer to TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - TIMING BELT COVERS .
  11. Install the Alignment Tool and align the camshafts (6250).

  12. CAUTION: If the camshaft timing belt is to be reused, mark the direction of the camshaft timing belt to rotation of camshaft prior to removal or premature wear or failure may occur.

  13. Relieve the tension on the timing belt tensioner pulley.
    • Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt.
    • Release tension on the timing belt by disconnecting the tensioner tab from the timing cover back plate.
  14. Slide the timing belt off camshaft sprockets (6256) and crankshaft sprockets (6306).

  15. Inspect the timing belt for wear. Install a new timing belt as required.
