Description & Operation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Blackwood. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Vehicle has 2 module communications networks. Both networks can be accessed by using a New Generation Star (NGS) tester connected to Data Link Connector (DLC).

Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) network consists of powertrain control module, 4-wheel anti-lock brake system module, electronic automatic temperature control module and hybrid electronic cluster interconnected by a pair of twisted wires (bus + and bus -). SCP network allows inter-module communication. SCP network is robust and will continue to function even if one bus wire is open, shorted to ground or shorted to power.

International Standards Organization (ISO) 9141 network consists of parking aid module, restraint control module, generic electronic module, driver's seat module, central security module, tonneau cover module and air suspension control module interconnected by a single wire. If that wire is open, shorted to ground or power, network will fail to communicate. ISO 9141 network does not permit inter-module communication. When using a scan tool to communicate with a module on the ISO 9141 network, the scan tool must initiate communications and ask for all information.
