1. Remove the hood. For additional information, refer to HOOD ALIGNMENT .
WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury.
2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
3. Remove the battery (10653).
4. Remove the battery tray (10732). For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
5. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) (9F472). For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
6. Drain the engine coolant. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
7. Recover the A/C refrigerant. For additional information, refer to AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM RECOVERY, EVACUATION AND CHARGING .
8. Remove the catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
9. Remove the radiator splash shield. For additional information, refer to FRONT END BODY PANELS .
10. Disconnect the starter motor wiring. For additional information, refer to STARTER ASSEMBLY .
11. Remove the drive belt (8620). For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
12. Remove the A/C compressor (19703). For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
13. Disconnect the lower radiator hose and heater hose.

14. Disconnect the power steering pressure line. For additional information, refer to HOSE -- ZETEC, PRESSURE AND RETURN and HOSE -- 2.0L, PRESSURE AND RETURN .
15. Remove the torque converter inspection cover.

16. Remove the torque converter nuts.

17. Remove the front roll restrictor.

18. Remove the nuts.

19. Remove the driveshafts (4602). For additional information, refer to AXLE SHAFTS .
20. Disconnect the transaxle cooler lines. For additional information, refer to TRANSAXLE .
21. Remove the transaxle cooler line bolts.

22. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
23. Disconnect the transaxle shift cable.

24. Disconnect the fuel charging wiring (9D930) from the transaxle internal wiring harness connector, turbine shaft speed sensor, transaxle range sensor and the heated oxygen sensor connector.

25. Remove the radiator (8005), fan shroud (8146) and fan motor (8C607) as an assembly. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL and REMOVAL .
26. Remove the transaxle cooler lines. For additional information, refer to TRANSAXLE .
27. Disconnect the accelerator cable (9A758) and the speed control actuator cable (9A825).

28. Disconnect the accelerator cable, the speed control actuator cable and the brackets.

29. Disconnect the power steering return hose (3A713). For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
30. Remove the radiator coolant recovery reservoir (8A080). For additional information, refer to REMOVAL .
31. Disconnect the generator wiring. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR .
32. Disconnect three vacuum lines.

33. Disconnect the fuel charging wiring harness connectors.

34. Disconnect the heater water hoses (18472).

35. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) and ground strap.

36. Disconnect the fuel line.
37. Support the engine with a floor crane.
38. Remove the bolt.

40. Remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.
41. Remove the eight bolts.

43. Mount the engine on a suitable engine stand.
