Power Steering Pump: Notes

Special Tool(s)

CAUTION: When repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of the power steering components can result.
  1. To remove the power steering pump or the power steering fluid high pressure line, remove the vent cowl screen. For additional information, refer to BODY SYSTEM - EXTERIOR .
  2. To remove the power steering pump or the power steering pump pulley, remove the engine accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to ENGINE - 3.9L & 4.2L .
  3. To remove the power steering fluid return line or the power steering fluid cooler, position the vehicle on a hoist. For additional information, refer to IDENTIFICATION CODES .
  4. To remove the power steering fluid return line, remove the LH front frame rail deflector shields.
  5. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

    To remove individual parts only, carry out the listed steps: 

    PART REMOVAL SEQUENCE

    Part Steps
    Power steering fluid reservoir 1-4
    Power steering fluid reservoir to power steering pump hose 2, 5, 6
    Power steering pump 5, 7-11
    Power steering pump pulley 5, 7-11
    High pressure line 7, 8, 12-16
    Return line 17-22
    Power steering fluid cooler 21, 23-29
    Power steering fluid cooler to power steering fluid reservoir hose 2, 27, 30

  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  7. Fill and leak test the system. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING SYSTEM FILLING .
