Fuel Tank Draining
WARNING:
Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury.
WARNING:
Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before servicing or disconnecting any of the fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & HOISTING .
- Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE - 3.0L (2V) or FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE - 3.0L (4V) .
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Using suitable hose pinching pliers, clamp the fuel tank filler hoses in the locations shown.
- Release the fuel tank tube hose clamp and quick release coupling and disconnect the hoses from the fuel tank tubes.
- Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
- Disconnect the fuel filter inlet hose.
- Disconnect the vapor tube fitting. For additional information, refer to QUICK RELEASE COUPLING .
- Position a suitable lifting device under the fuel tank.
- Remove the two fuel tank support strap bolts.
- Partially lower the fuel tank to access the fuel pump module while swinging the fuel tank support straps away from the fuel tank.
- Using the special tool, remove the fuel pump module retaining ring.
- Position aside the fuel pump module and drain the fuel tank, using the special tools.
CAUTION:
The fuel pump module must be handled carefully to avoid damage to the float arm, filter and convolute hoses.
NOTE:
A stop should be felt when aligning the raised arrow on top of the fuel pump module to the dot on the fuel tank.
